The 1st International conference on Plant proteases 2011

The 1st International conference on PLANT PROTEASES 2011 "From biology to biotechnology" will be organised in Hemavan on April, 10-14, 2011 by Umeå Plant Science Centre. The conference will deal with the biology, biochemistry and molecular biology of plant proteases collecting together the foremost scientists in the field. The approach of the conference is broad, but a special emphasis is paid on a few topic listed below.

There is a possibility to accommodate a few more participants in the 1st Plant Protease meeting in Hemavan, Sweden, which will take place in April, 10 -14, 2011. Please note that
-the absolute deadline for registration is February, 21, 2011.
-only 10 rooms are still available for booking at the conference venue
-we have several new invited speakers in the conference
-we can offer funds for a few, selected participants to cover costs for the conference registration in a shared double room. The selection is based on the abstracts. Please indicate if you wish to obtain these funds.

Novel methods , such as proteomics and degradomics
Proteases in xylem tissues and cell wall formation

In addition, a minisymposium during one day will be organised on xylem development and wood formation.

We have three main reasons for organising a conference on plant proteases in Sweden. First of all, proteases are a group of enzymes that are central in probably every single biological process. Plants contains typically between 600 and 900 different proteases, and the function is known only for a small portion of them. We envision that elucidation of the function of proteases will give tools to solve the increasing problems with global food security as well as novel sources of material and energy. Second, the existing conferences and meetings focusing on proteases are dominated by medical/zoological applications, which has caused frustration among plant researchers already for a long time. A wish to start an annual plant protease meeting has been put forward by several international well-known researchers. Third, Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC) has strong research in this area, and several research groups within the centre focus on various aspects of plant proteases. We therefore believe that UPSC is a right place to organise a conference within this field.

The goals of the conference are:
to put focus on plant protease research for the first time to bring together plant protease researchers
to bring together scientists working purely with the basic aspects of plant proteases and scientists with applied interests within forest biotechnology
to bring forward the technological advances in the field
to initiate a continuous series of conferences on plant proteases
